The Importance of Early Preventative Care
Although you may assume that your child does not need to visit the dentist until adult teeth begin to come in, dental health actually begins in infancy. You should gently wipe down your baby’s gums with a wet cloth, and begin brushing with a soft toothbrush as soon as the first tooth appears. Your child should make an initial visit to the dentist after his first birthday, or six months after the first tooth erupts. From then on, you should take your child in for checkups every six months, and maintain their brushing and flossing routine at home.
Routine Cleanings
As soon as your child is old enough to visit our office, the dentist will perform routine cleanings, removing plaque and bacteria. Regular care will help protect against decay and cavities. The dentist can also look for early signs of dental abnormalities, and, if necessary, we can begin to develop a plan for later dental treatment. Regular visits to our office are also important because they teach your child about the importance of proper dental care. In a fun and comfortable environment, we will explain dental hygiene to your child, helping to instill lifelong habits to protect oral health.
Dental Sealants
The molars are particularly prone to decay because the deep grooves on the chewing surfaces often harbor bacteria and bits of food. To help prevent cavities, we can apply dental sealants, made of a specially formulated coat of plastic, to the top of your child’s molars. Before placing a sealant, the dentist will thoroughly clean the tooth and apply a mild acid solution to the top surface. This solution is completely safe, and gently roughens the tooth surface to create a stronger bonding surface for the sealant. Next, the dentist will apply the sealant and harden it using a curing light. Dental sealants have been proven effective in protecting against dental decay. With proper dental maintenance, sealants can last for years to come.
Fluoride Treatments
When acid attacks the outer surface of a tooth, the dental enamel loses minerals. This process occurs continually, even for patients who have outstanding dental hygiene. Fluoride helps to strengthen dental enamel and speed the remineralization process. In some cases, fluoride can help reverse dental damage. The dentist will apply a fluoride gel or varnish to your child’s teeth, and he or she may also prescribe fluoride supplements in the form of small tablets.
